When BR549 took a hiatus three years ago, frontman Chuck Mead found inspiration in another form of collaboration, as a staff songwriter for Ten Ten Music Group, a Nashville publishing house. All the songs on his first solo effort, the self-released “Journeyman’s Wager,” except for a George Harrison-penned Beatles cover, come from that fruitful stint. To read on click here

Up on Edgehill
Up on Edgehill
By Trent Summer & Chuck MeadWell they fought the yelling rebels back
From the fort up on the hill
Fought them off with pick and axe
Brother what I’m telling you is real
They spilled a lot of blood up there
But in the end there we’re standing up on Edge hillThey settled in and settled down
Stuck together and made a town up on that hill
Hard work pays the working man
And the good times roll when he can pay the bills
And they built houses made of limestone
Up on Edge hillChorus
Up on edge hill
Up on edge hill
This life on earth won’t last
But your spirit will
Time rolls along
No it don’t stand still
You can see for miles and miles
Up on Edge hillThere were doctors and lawyers and journeymen that
Hung their shingles out on that hill
On Saturday night they’d all be at Cotton’s
Dancin’ drinkin’ and raisin’ hell
Then get up and go to church on Sunday morning
Up on Edge hillChorus
The govt. fought and closed the stores
To build the interstate though that hill
Then torn some houses down
And close off some streets
But that just made it easier to steal
But their still sitting there on there front porches
Looking out at what’s left of Edge hill -
After The Last Witness Is Gone
By Chuck Mead & Jon Tiven
Chorus
After the last witness is gone
We’ll sort it all out later on
We won’t who was right or wrong
After the last witness is goneTell me son what would you think
If tomorrow we were all extinct
Some chimp would tag me as the missing link
When the last witness is goneToday I talked to a hummingbird
He laid it out there like I’d never heard
He said “The war is just to thin out the herd
After the last witness is gone.”Chorus
Would Mother Nature have a smile on her face
As She said goodbye to the Human Race
She’ll wipe away the slightest trace
We defiled her beautiful worldMaybe you think that I may have a point
About the next in line to run this joint
Which Alpha-dog will God anoint?
After the last witness is goneChorus

A Long Time Ago
By Chuck Mead & Mark Collie
I pledged my heart to the country
I sold my soul to rock n roll
I told you I’d be back someday
With my pockets full of gold
I played my hand down at the crossroads
Got stoned on Satan’s grass
And I remembered my Mama read from the Bible
“This too shall pass”But that was a long time that was a long time
That was a long time agoAll I wanted was a living
And someone to share my life
Maybe a song on the radio
Then I would come back and make you my wife
But hopes and dreams and promises
Don’t always come true
On that winding road to the promised land
That led me away from youBut that was a long time that was a long time
That was a long time agoI burned right through Atlanta
And everybody knew my name
Singin’ “Rainy Night in Georgia”
“Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain”
On the wings of an Eagle flyin’ on diesel fuel
I count the miles and think of you
And I wonder if you miss me
The way you used to doBut that was a long time that was a long time
That was a long time agoI broke down outside of Memphis
In a ’73 Ford van
I got a gig tonight on Beale Street
For my Dixie biker fans
I used to say “I’d give anything
Come win come lose or draw”
But I’ve learned that it takes everything
If you want to have it allBut that was a long time that was a long time
That was a long time ago -

A Song
If there’s a story left to tell
I hope they tell it well
The good, the bad, the ugly, right or wrong
And before this life is through
We’ll leave you with this tune
And at least we’ll be remembered in a songAnd every time you hear that far away
Wailin’ in the night
And think of everything we’ll leave behindAfter all is said and done
As long as someone sings along
At least we’ll be remembered in a songWhen we answered to the call
We knew we’d have to give it all
That’s all that you can ask from anyone
So here’s to all that we believed
And all that we received
I hope we’ll be remembered in a songAnd when you howl up to the sky
That you’ve been livin’
And everything is yours and ours and mineAfter all is said and done
As long as someone sings along
At least we’ll be remembered in a songIt’s a song about rain, pain
And the joy that we can’t explain
It’s a song about love, laughter
And happy ever after
It’s a song about love
And the moon and the stars above
Everybody sing along
Even after we’re gone
At least we’ll be remembered in a songIt’s a song about you, me
And the way we used to be
Everybody sing along
Even after we’re gone
At least we’ll be remembered in a song -
